How to Work With a Recruiter When You Are Not Actively Looking for a Job

August 24, 2026·5 min read·By TrustedHire

Most advice about working with a recruiter starts with the assumption that you need something right now. A new role. An escape from a bad situation. A title bump. But that framing misses the most useful version of the relationship entirely.

A recruiter you meet before you need one is a different resource than a recruiter you call on a Thursday afternoon because something just changed at work. The difference shows up in how well they can advocate for you when it counts.

What a recruiter can actually do for you before you are looking

When there is no urgency on your end, a good recruiter will tell you things they might soften in a more transactional conversation. What your compensation looks like relative to the current market. Whether your title maps the way you think it does at companies of different sizes. What skills are showing up repeatedly in roles you would eventually want. That kind of honest, low-stakes conversation is genuinely useful and hard to get anywhere else.

How to approach the first conversation

Be straightforward. Tell the recruiter you are not looking right now but that you want to be on their radar and understand what the market looks like for someone with your background. Most recruiters will welcome that. It costs them nothing and builds something they value, which is a warm relationship with a qualified person they can call when the right situation comes up. Do not pretend to be more interested than you are. Recruiters talk to people all day and can read the room.

What to share and what to keep current

Give the recruiter enough to work with. A current resume, even a rough one, is more useful than a LinkedIn profile. Be specific about what you have done and what kind of environment you have thrived in. Then stay loosely in touch. A quick note when you take on a new responsibility or wrap up a significant project keeps you visible without being pushy. Once a year is enough.

Why it matters when something actually changes

When a recruiter already knows your background, your preferences, and your communication style, they can move faster and pitch you more accurately. They are not starting from a cold resume. They are calling a company they work with and saying they know someone worth meeting. That introduction lands differently than a submission from someone who heard from you for the first time last week.

The professionals who navigate career transitions most smoothly are rarely the ones who built the best resume in a hurry. They are the ones who stayed connected to the right people when they had nothing to ask for.
